Paul "Doc" Hines is A Titan of a Man. He was featured in the Disney movie Remember the Titans. His character was portrayed by Greg Alan Williams.
In 2003, his daugher Paula Hines Lonergan wrote the inspirational biography about his life titled A Titan of a Man - A Coach of the Famous '71 Titans Who Inspired Generations of Young People.
Doc was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the Isaiah and Lottie Hines. He grew up in the Campostella area of Norfolk. He attended Richard Alan Tucker Elementary School. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
When asked what influenced him to become a teacher, he says there
was a high school coach and physical education teacher, Albert
Overby who he greatly admired. Mr. Overby became a role model
for Paul. Paul admired the way he dealt with children and the
personal interest he took in them, making everyone feel important.
Observing his behavior, Paul knew right away what career he wanted
to pursue.
Paul attended Norfolk State University for two years and then
attended Virginia State College, now Virginia State University.
He graduated with a degree in Physical Education.
He started teaching
at Ralph Bunche High School in King George, Virginia in 1960.
That was his first teaching job. He hung on in there but says
when he received his first paycheck it so was small, he was ready
to leave. Happily he didn't because there, he met his future
wife.
In 1965, he started
teaching at Pomonkey High School, in Pomonkey, Maryland. The
principal at the time was Charles Coates.
In 1968, Paul transferred to Lackey High School in Charles County,
Maryland. He worked with Cecil Short, who remains a lifelong
friend of the family.
Finally, in 1970, he transferred to the Alexandria School System
where he taught for the next 29 years, until he retired in 1999.
Paul, throughout the years, has been a coach of basketball, baseball,

Paul Hines is very highly esteemed by his former students, fellow
teachers, friends and family. He is a man with a ever ready laugh
and a jolly and loud voice you can hear from afar.
